November 30, 2023

FLORENCE, Ala., – Rachna Valvani, MD, CMD, has earned the designation of Certified Medical Director (CMD) by the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM). Best known as ‘Dr. Rich,’ she is an internal medicine and geriatrics faculty physician at North Alabama Medical Center.
The ABPLM Board of Directors announced that Valvani is one of more than 5,000 physicians nationwide who have received the CMD designation since the program’s inception in 1991. The rigorous training and credentialing program focuses on the clinical and management knowledge specific to long-term care.
“We are very proud of Dr. Rich and her commitment to ensuring our patients receive the highest quality care,” said Sheila McCord, Internal Medicine Residency Program Coordinator at NAMC. “Investing in Dr. Rich as a Certified Medical Director is the right step toward creating a positive, supportive and safe environment that promotes healing and wellness. The end result will be improved outcomes for our patients, residents and their families.”
The ABPLM CMD certification program recognizes the dual clinical and management roles of the medical director and requires indicators of competence in both areas. The dual nature of the skills needed makes the position of medical director unique in medicine. The certification process is based on an experiential model that incorporates mechanisms such as fellowship programs, board certification in a medical specialty, comprehensive courses in medical direction, continuing medical education programs and administrative experience to fulfill certification requirements.
