Program Director
In 2023, we welcomed our 5th Internal Medicine Residency class to Florence, Alabama. The breadth of education at North Alabama Medical Center will prepare you for the next steps in your career. NAMC is a newly built state-of-the-art 263-bed multispecialty hospital with over 200 physicians of various specialties on staff that serves northwest Alabama's needs.
Florence is a friendly mid-sized city in North Alabama offering a small town atmosphere, revitalized downtown area and home to University of North Alabama. Situated on the Tennessee River the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities including boating, hiking, biking, and more abounds. It offers a lifestyle that you can enjoy in your spare time outside the hospital as much as your time in it.
Our program is embedded in a regional medical center that provides tertiary care to large multi-state area. This setting results in residents’ exposure to medicine that is seen in major university associated hospitals. Our size is one of our strengths. Our residents know each other. Our low faculty -resident ratio allows for very close mentoring relationships throughout training.
Educational experiences designed specifically for interns and residents are held daily in the hospital and in the outpatient clinics. These experiences include robust morning reports, resident-run M&M sessions, and Evidence-Based Medicine journal clubs. Daily noon conference didactics are delivered by IM and subspecialty faculty.
We strive to train physicians to practice in diverse settings, some of which may have limited resources. Our graduates have gone on to various settings; many have stayed on as faculty or otherwise at North Alabama Medical Center, others have moved on to private practice, some have become physician leaders, and many of our graduates have entered fellowships.
I invite you to look closely at our program, we have much to offer you.
Sincerely,
Jan Westerman, MD
