Nurse Makes Birthday Special for Patient’s Daughter
August 12, 2019Lauren Tharp, RN, found out her patient’s daughter was turning 7-years-old. Gracelyn planned on having a birthday party at the splash pad this year, but plans changed since her dad was in the hospital. To make Gracelyn’s day a little brighter, Lauren, went and bought cupcakes and a birthday crown and sash for the little girl.

Patient Returns to Thank ER Nurse with Hand-Knit Baby Blanket
June 20, 2019Boone Carter came into the Emergency Room in February after a basketball accident left him with a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus. He was in extreme pain with spasms twisting his knee out of place. Boone says he was screaming for someone to hold his leg down and his nurse, Alex Sockwell, immediately jumped on top of his knee to keep it in place – even though she was pregnant.

Nontraditional Student Excels at NAMC Through Partnership with NWSCC
June 06, 2019Lesa King joined the team in 2017 as a Care Partner, while still in school, working toward her RN degree at Northwest-Shoals Community College. As part of the nursing program at NWSCC, students can sit for their LPN license halfway through their training. Based on her strong performance as a Care Partner, North Alabama Medical Center hired Lesa as an LPN, with the intention of using her in this role until she finished the course requirements to become an RN.

Cath Lab Named After Founding Cardiologist
May 29, 2019Dr. William Heaton realized the potential for a cardiac cath lab in Florence more than four decades ago. Shortly after coming to the Shoals, Dr. Heaton gave a presentation for hospital staff and requested $100,000 to bring a cath lab to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. At that time, it was the only cath lab from Memphis to Chattanooga and Nashville to Birmingham.

100th Electrophysiology Case Performed
May 21, 2019When Jorge Castell came to North Alabama Medical Center for his heart procedure Tuesday, May 21, he didn’t realize he was part of a milestone for our cardiac cath lab!Dr. Tom McElderry performed Castell’s heart ablation – the 100th EP procedure performed, since Dr. McElderry started practicing at NAMC.“I’m proud that this service is allowing people to stay in the Shoals for the treatment,” said Dr. McElderry. “This means 100 patients and families didn’t have to travel to Birmingham, which is a relief for those patients.”Castell says the ablation treated a heart valve flutter. “I am very grateful I could have this procedure done here. I live ten minutes away, so this is convenient for my family. All the staff have been excellent. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”We are happy to serve our community and provide these electrophysiology cases at NAMC.

Cardiologist Receives Young Leadership Award
April 09, 2019Dr. Rachit Shah recently received the CRT (Cardiovascular Research Technologies) Young Leadership Award during a conference in Washington D.C., for his academic and professional achievements. CRT, a leading interventional cardiology conference, is attended by more than 3,000 interventional and endovascular specialists.Dr. Shah serves patients at Heart Health Center and North Alabama Medical Center as an interventional cardiologist. Congratulation Dr. Shah! We are proud to have you as part of our team.He also spoke at the conference about what this award means to him as a young cardiologist in the field.
