July 22, 2025

FLORENCE, Ala., – The Southern Medical Association (SMA) has announced that North Alabama Medical Center’s Amna Bint I Munir, MBBS has been appointed to the newly-formed International Medical Graduate (IMG) Support & Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee.

“As an international medical graduate myself, I’ve personally experienced the challenges, uncertainties and resilience required to navigate the path toward residency in the United States,” said Dr. Munir. “I want to help create a space where IMGs feel truly seen, supported and valued by contributing to initiatives that foster connection and provide accessible resources.”

Dr. Munir is a PGY-2 (second-year) Internal Medicine resident at North Alabama Medical Center (NAMC) and an international medical graduate from Pakistan. She completed her medical training at Fatima Jinnah Medical University, an all-women’s medical school in Lahore.

Now training in Florence, she has grown to appreciate the region’s hospitality and slower pace of life. She is passionate about improving patient outcomes through research, advocacy and community outreach. Outside of work, Dr. Munir enjoys traveling, experimenting with new recipes and fitting in workouts whenever her schedule allows.

“I am so proud of this achievement of one of our residents,” said Dr. Rachna Valvani, who supervises the IM Residency Continuity Care Clinic as the Director of Geriatrics. “She has strong advocacy and professional skills.”
